Due to high production costs, most factory vehicals, including the Honda come with cast iron exhaust manifolds that are very restrictive. Its much cheaper to produce these cast iron maniolds than it is to produce "tube" style exhaust headers. The exhaust gases act in a very similar way to fluid as they flow through the manifold and the rest of the system. Because of this fluid like property, its important that the path in which the gases travel is smooth and gentle. With a factory exhaust manifold, this exhaust path is usually not as smooth or as gentle as it could be and this is why you should purchase and aftermarket exhaust header. The difference is that the aftermarket header will create a much smoother path for the gases to travel, allowing the gases to exit the combustion chamber more quickly.

The next stop in your exhaust gases journey through the exhaust system is the catalytic converter. The catalytic converters main function is to help clean the toxic exhaust gases before it is spewed out into the atmosphere, and into our bodies. Many times the catalytic converter can be very restrictive, much like the factory exhaust manifold. To remedy this problem, you should purchase a high flow catalytic converter for your Honda exhaust system. This will ensure that there are no bottle necks in the flow of your exhaust gases as they leave the vehicle. It is also important to note that simply removing the catalytic converter all together is against the law and really doesn't provide any more performance gains than a good high flow converter.

The final part of your exhaust is the muffler. The mufflers main function is to simply make your exhaust quieter and more pleasant sounding. While we would all love to drive around with a straight exhaust, common courtesy says that its just not the right thing to do, not to mention the police will not be very happy. Because of this it's important that your muffler has enough flow capacity to let the super heated, quickly moving exhaust gases exit with as little resistance as possible, while at the same time keeping noise levels to a minimum. The final piece of the aftermarket exhaust system we will be discussing is the actual piping itself. It is often said that the bigger the exhaust is, the better it is. This is simply not true. Remember, the exhaust gases that are flowing through the pipes are extremely hot, and we would like to make sure they remain that way. Cooler air means denser air, and denser air means heavier air, which required more power to move. The harder your engine has to work to move the air through the exhaust system, the less power you get to the wheels. Large pipe diameters tend to make exhaust travel slower, which gives it more time to cool down and become more dense. Because of this phenomena, its best to keep your exhaust piping to a respectable size, usually somewhere around 2.5" to 3" for a Honda aftermarket exhaust.
