Custom Honda Turbo Kit
Are you looking to build your own custom turbo kit? We have put together an extensive guide detailing everything you need to get started building your kit. We have tried to include everything from the major parts (turbocharger) to the most minuscule parts (clamps and hoses). Many people believe that they can simply find a turbo manifold and turbo charger which fit their vehicle and safely make more horsepower. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There is an incredible amount of planning and testing that goes into building a quality Honda turbo kit.If you are just looking for turbo parts, checkout our store
Custom Turbo kit
The turbocharger is probably the most obvious part you will need in your Honda turbo kit, but be warned that there are many shapes and sizes for turbochargers. Finding the best turbo charger is completely dependent on the goals you have for your Honda. If you are looking for a quick spooling autocross style turbo kit, you will want to look into getting a smaller sized turbocharger. If you are looking to build a drag racing Honda, a larger size turbo may be more beneficial. You can find a variety of different turbo chargers here
Turbo Manifold
In order to get your turbocharger spinning, you need to direct exhaust air flow through its turbine. A turbo exhaust manifold will do just that. The exhaust manifold is designed to turn the energy released by your escaping exhaust gases into rotational energy needed to spin the turbochargers turbine at high speeds. The spinning turbine compresses the fresh charge air and sends it through the charge system into the cylinders. The turbo manifolds design needs to be extremely efficient in order to maximize the energy provided to the turbochargers turbine wheel. Ideally each runner in the manifold should be of equal length, allowing each exhaust pulse to hit the turbine wheel in a very precise timing pattern.Check out our selection of Custom Turbo kit manifolds
Wastegate
As stated above, a turbocharger is powered by the energy exerted from your exhaust system. As exhaust gases flow through the turbine, pressure continuously builds inside the compressor housing. A wastegate's job is to regulate the pressure created by the turbine and keep the pressure, or "boost" level constant. The wastegate works by acting as a sort of valve to divert the flowing exhaust away from the turbochargers exhaust turbine wheel. When the wastegate actuator senses that the charge pressure is at its maximum level, the valve will open and direct the exhaust gases away from the turbine, which causes the turbine wheel to slow down and ultimately reduce the charge pressure in the intake system. Find a wastegate for your custom turbo setup
Intercooler
According to the ideal gas law, air, or any gas, will begin to heat up when it is compressed. Because a turbocharger compresses the intake air to such a high degree, it becomes very hot. Hot air is bad for your engine because it promotes detonation (which will ultimately lead to engine failure) and also decreases power output. In order to keep the air in your turbo system relatively cool, the intercooler acts much in the same way that your radiator does to cool the engine coolant. It acts as a heat exchanger. The cooler ambient air flows through the fins of the intercooler and the heat from within is transfered to the flowing air, which is rapidly replaced by more cool air. It is important to properly size your intercooler when designing your own custom turbo kit. Obviously a larger intercooler will have more cooling capacity than a smaller one, but as with most things, there is a tradeoff involved. The bigger your intercooler gets, the more you will suffer from what is called "pressure drop". As the size of the intercooler increases, it takes more work by the compressor to fill it, and as a result you will actually have less pressure on the outlet side of the intercooler than you do on the inlet side. Depending on the size of your intercooler, this loss can be anywhere between 1 and 5 PSI.
There are three common air-to-air intercooler styles you can choose from.
Side Mount Intercooler
The first is called a side mount intercooler because they are often times mounted on the "side" of the engine bay. these intercoolers are usually on the smaller side and do not provide as much cooling as other options. Side mount intercoolers usually do not receive much ambient air flow, further decreasing their cooling abilities. Front Mount Intercooler

The second type of intercooler, and the most common air-to-air intercooler is called a Front mount intercooler. These get their name because they are mounted to the front of the vehical, often in front of the radiator, which provides the maximum amount of ambient air flow. Another advantage to a front mount intercooler is that the front of the vehical usually offers more space, and hence you can use a larger unit.
Top Mount intercooler
The third type of intercooler, which are often times used on Subarus is a top mount intercooler. These intercoolers are mounted on top of the engine itself, under the hood. In most cases, they are used in conjunction with a "hood scoop", which is why many Suabru vehicals have a "bump" on the hood. Without a hood scoop, they are not much more efficient than a side mount, except that they can afford to be a little bit larger in size. To Be Continued...
